Dia Chelsea is Dia Art Foundation’s free contemporary art space at 537 West 22nd Street in Manhattan’s Chelsea gallery district. Reopened in 2021 after a major renovation by Architecture Research Office, the 32,500-square-foot complex combines three former industrial buildings and provides approximately 20,000 square feet of exhibition and programme space. Unlike a conventional museum with a broad permanent collection, Dia Chelsea presents focused, long-term exhibitions, new commissions and artist projects, particularly in the fields of Minimal, Conceptual and postwar art. In 2026, its main exhibition is David Lamelas: The Machine, running through January 2027. For art travellers, Dia Chelsea is an essential stop for experiencing contemporary art at a slower pace and works especially well as part of a Chelsea gallery route or a wider tour of Dia’s permanent sites across New York City.
