Neue Galerie New York

A jewel-box museum on Museum Mile where Vienna and Berlin come alive in New York. Neue Galerie New York is the place to see Klimt’s Woman in Gold — but also to feel the elegance, anxiety and brilliance of early 20th-century German and Austrian art.
Located at 1048 Fifth Avenue, near 86th Street and Central Park, Neue Galerie New York is dedicated to early 20th-century German and Austrian art and design. Its identity is beautifully focused: Vienna 1900, German Expressionism, modern design, decorative arts, psychology, beauty and rupture.
The museum’s star is Gustav Klimt’s Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, also known as Woman in Gold, permanently on view in the Klimt Gallery. The work is not only famous for its gold, beauty and visual power, but also for its restitution history after being seized by the Nazis and later returned to the Bloch-Bauer heirs before being acquired for the Neue Galerie in 2006.
The museum is also entering a major new chapter: in 2028, it is expected to merge with The Metropolitan Museum of Art, while preserving the Neue Galerie’s identity and Fifth Avenue location as a home for German and Austrian modernism.

What you’ll see here
At Neue Galerie, the experience is intimate, refined and concentrated. This is not a huge museum to conquer; it is a place to slow down and enter a very specific cultural world.
You may experience:
- Gustav Klimt and Viennese modernism
- Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka and Austrian Expressionism
- German Expressionist artists
- Decorative arts, furniture and design from Vienna 1900
- A historic mansion atmosphere on Fifth Avenue
- Café Sabarsky, one of New York’s most atmospheric museum cafés
Worth the trip
Yes — especially if you love museums that feel intimate rather than overwhelming.
What makes Neue Galerie special is its focus. In a city of enormous museums, it offers something rare: one intense world, carefully framed. Gold, design, portraiture, music, cafés, interiors and modern anxiety all belong to the same atmosphere.
ArtLovers Tip
Don’t go only for Woman in Gold. Let Klimt be the doorway, then follow the whole mood of Vienna 1900: beauty, ornament, psychology, desire, modernity and unease. For Artlovers, it is worth the trip because it proves that a small museum can hold a whole cultural universe. You don’t leave thinking only about Klimt — you leave thinking about beauty, memory, loss, restitution and the fragile glamour of a world before it broke.
