View on Google Maps

A discreet St James’s gallery with serious contemporary-art intelligence. Thomas Dane Gallery is where London’s gallery scene feels focused, international and quietly powerful — the kind of place where one exhibition can stay with you longer than a whole museum afternoon.

Thomas Dane Gallery is a contemporary art gallery based in London, with two nearby spaces at 3 Duke Street, St James’s and 11 Duke Street, St James’s, plus a third gallery in Naples. Its London programme is part of the refined St James’s / Mayfair gallery circuit, close to Piccadilly, Green Park and the Royal Academy.

Founded in 2004, the gallery is known for its commitment to moving image, film, photography, painting, sculpture and conceptually strong contemporary practices. It has supported artists such as Steve McQueen, Paul Pfeiffer, Akram Zaatari, Amie Siegel and Bruce Conner, while also bringing major international artists including Cecily Brown, Glenn Ligon, Albert Oehlen, Dana Schutz and Arturo Herrera to London audiences

What you’ll see here

At Thomas Dane Gallery, expect temporary exhibitions rather than a permanent collection. The experience is usually quiet, precise and highly curated: one artist, one project, one set of ideas presented with real attention.

You may encounter:

  • Contemporary painting, sculpture, photography and installation
  • Moving image and film-based practices
  • International artists with strong museum presence
  • Focused solo exhibitions and curated projects
  • A polished but not intimidating St James’s gallery atmosphere
  • Two London spaces within a short walk of each other

Worth the trip

Yes — especially if you want to understand London’s contemporary art scene beyond the obvious names.

What makes Thomas Dane Gallery special is its quiet authority. It is not a spectacle-driven gallery; it feels more considered, artist-led and intellectually sharp. Its programme often rewards visitors who enjoy contemporary art with depth, ambiguity and atmosphere.

ArtLovers Tip

Visit both Duke Street spaces if both are open. The gallery is small enough to fit into a Mayfair / St James’s walk, but serious enough to make you slow down.

For Artlovers, it is worth including because it shows the more discreet side of London’s art power: galleries where artists, collectors, curators and future museum histories move in a quieter, more concentrated way.
