Serpentine South Gallery

View on Google Maps

The original Serpentine space: small, free, elegant and deeply influential. Serpentine South Gallery is where contemporary art meets London park life — a place to experience ambitious ideas without the weight of a huge museum.

Serpentine South Gallery is the original Serpentine gallery, located in Kensington Gardens, London W2 3XA. Before becoming an art gallery in 1970, the building was a tea-room, designed by J. Grey West and built in 1934.

Today, Serpentine works across two galleries: Serpentine South and Serpentine North, which sit a short walk apart on opposite sides of the Serpentine Bridge. Entry to both galleries is free, and visitors are advised to book a ticket.

What you’ll see here

At Serpentine South, expect temporary contemporary art exhibitions rather than a permanent collection. The scale is intimate, but the program is often internationally important: installation, painting, sculpture, performance, film, architecture, public art and experimental projects.

You may experience:

  • Contemporary art exhibitions
  • Artist commissions and site-responsive projects
  • Talks, performances and public programs
  • The famous Serpentine Pavilion nearby during the summer season
  • A free art stop inside one of London’s most beautiful parks
  • A perfect pairing with Serpentine North, Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens or South Kensington museums

Worth the trip

Yes — especially if you want contemporary art in London without queues, pressure or museum fatigue.

What makes Serpentine South Gallery special is its lightness. It has hosted major artists and shaped contemporary art conversations, but the visit still feels open, free and human. The park changes the rhythm: you see art, step outside, breathe, walk, think.

For Artlovers, it is worth including because it shows another side of London culture — not only monumental museums, but art as something you can encounter through gardens, architecture, weather, public space and one beautifully focused exhibition at a time.

ArtLovers Tip

Visit Serpentine South as part of a walk, not as a standalone checklist stop. Start with the exhibition, cross toward Serpentine North, then let the park become part of the experience.
