A small London gallery with the emotional force of a masterpiece room. The Courtauld Gallery is where Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Renaissance art and intimate collecting come together inside Somerset House.

Located in the historic setting of Somerset House, The Courtauld Gallery is home to one of the UK’s most refined art collections. It is especially famous for its Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces, including Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear and Manet’s A Bar at the Folies-Bergère.

The collection ranges from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, with paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture and decorative arts. It is not a giant museum — and that is part of its charm. The Courtauld feels concentrated, elegant and deeply personal.

What you’ll see here

At The Courtauld Gallery, the visit is about quality over quantity. You move through beautifully paced rooms where major works feel surprisingly close.

You may experience:

  • Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces
  • Van Gogh, Manet, Cézanne, Seurat and other modern icons
  • Medieval and Early Renaissance art
  • Renaissance to 18th-century works in the Blavatnik Fine Rooms
  • 20th-century art and the Bloomsbury Group
  • A quieter, more intimate alternative to London’s bigger museums

Worth the trip

Yes — especially if you want a London art experience that feels intense but not exhausting.

What makes The Courtauld Gallery special is its intimacy. In London, where museums can feel huge and overwhelming, The Courtauld gives you something more focused: a collection where every room matters and every masterpiece has space to breathe.

ArtLovers Tip

Don’t rush to Van Gogh and leave. Start with the older rooms, then let the Impressionist works arrive like a shock of modern light. The Courtauld is small enough to experience slowly — and that is exactly how it should be seen.

For Artlovers, it is worth including because it offers one of the most beautiful art pauses in the city: Somerset House, quiet rooms, modern painting at its most human, and the feeling that a small gallery can still change your whole day.
