The Approach Gallery

An East London gallery above a pub, with a reputation for spotting artists before the wider art world catches up. The Approach is intimate, independent, and quietly influential — exactly the kind of place that makes London’s gallery scene feel alive.
The Approach is a contemporary art gallery in Bethnal Green, located on the 1st floor of 47 Approach Road, London E2 9LY, above The Approach Tavern. The gallery was founded in 1997 by Jake Miller, together with artists Damien Meade, Ana Genoves and others, with an early aim of giving solo exhibitions to London-based artists at the beginning of their careers.
Over time, The Approach developed an international programme while keeping its original East London identity. It is known for discovering artists, building long-term relationships, and presenting exhibitions that feel focused, intelligent and artist-led rather than flashy.

What you’ll see here
At The Approach, expect temporary exhibitions rather than a permanent collection. The scale is intimate, but the programme can be very strong — painting, sculpture, photography, installation, conceptual work and intergenerational group shows.
You may encounter:
- Emerging and established contemporary artists
- Focused solo exhibitions
- Artist-led and curatorially sharp projects
- A classic East London gallery atmosphere
- A visit that begins by entering through a pub
- A quieter alternative to Mayfair’s more polished gallery circuit
Worth the trip
Yes — especially if you want to understand London’s contemporary art scene beyond Tate, Mayfair and the big institutions.
What makes The Approach special is its history of instinct. It has operated from its original East End base for more than 25 years, building a reputation for discovering artists and presenting serious contemporary art without losing its independent character.
For Artlovers, it is worth including because it shows London at its best: not only monumental museums or global gallery brands, but small spaces where artists, ideas and future art histories begin.
ArtLovers Tip
Don’t separate the gallery from its setting. Part of the charm is the East London feeling: a pub downstairs, a serious exhibition upstairs, and the sense that contemporary art can still appear in unexpected, human-scale places.
