Thaddaeus Ropac - Ely House, London

A Mayfair mansion where contemporary art feels theatrical, historic and seriously high-level. Thaddaeus Ropac London — Ely House is one of those galleries that turns a free exhibition visit into something close to a museum experience.
Thaddaeus Ropac London is based at Ely House, 37 Dover Street, London W1S 4NJ, in the heart of Mayfair. The gallery occupies a five-floor listed mansion that was once the London residence of the Bishop of Ely.
The building itself is a major part of the experience. Ely House was built in 1772 by Sir Robert Taylor and later remodelled in 1909 for the Albemarle Club by the Arts & Crafts architectural firm Smith and Brewer.
Thaddaeus Ropac is one of the major international galleries for modern and contemporary art, with spaces in cities including London, Paris, Salzburg, Seoul and Milan. Its London gallery brings that global art-world energy into a historic Mayfair setting.

- Museum-quality solo exhibitions
- Historic architecture used as an exhibition stage
- A refined Mayfair gallery atmosphere

Worth the trip
Yes — especially if you want to experience London’s gallery scene beyond the big museums.
What makes Thaddaeus Ropac London — Ely House special is the combination of global contemporary art + historic architecture + Mayfair art-world power. It is a commercial gallery, but the scale and quality of the exhibitions can feel institutional.
ArtLovers Tip
Don’t rush through it like a normal gallery. Ely House changes the way contemporary art feels: the rooms, doors, staircase and Mayfair atmosphere are part of the visit.
For Artlovers, it is worth including because it shows how contemporary art lives in London today: not only in Tate or the Royal Academy, but inside galleries where artists, collectors, curators, architecture and cultural prestige meet in real time.
