Serrería Belga

An old industrial sawmill turned into one of Madrid’s most interesting cultural spaces. Serrería Belga is where architecture, exhibitions and urban memory meet just steps from the Paseo del Arte.
In the heart of Madrid's Paseo del Arte, a space full of life awaits you, located in what was once an old industrial sawmill, now fully renovated.
As part of the Landscape of Light (declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the building itself is a gem from the early 20th century. It is a unique place where industrial history blends with modern design to create a meeting point open to everyone, where creativity and the desire to share are the true protagonists.
Espacio Cultural Serrería Belga is a municipal cultural centre located at Calle Alameda, 15, very close to CaixaForum Madrid, the Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Barrio de las Letras. The building is a former early 20th-century industrial sawmill and forms part of Madrid’s Paisaje de la Luz, recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage.
The original complex was built in 1925 for the Sociedad Belga de los Pinares de El Paular, with two industrial naves: one for sawing wood and another for storage and drying. After its rehabilitation, the building became an important cultural container in the city, first associated with Medialab-Prado and now functioning as a flexible space for exhibitions, events, creativity and public programs.
What you’ll see here
At Serrería Belga, the experience changes depending on the program. It is not a museum with a permanent collection, but a cultural venue where exhibitions, installations, photography, design, architecture, digital culture and contemporary projects can take over the industrial space.
You may experience:
- Temporary exhibitions
- Photography, design and architecture projects
- Contemporary culture and urban creativity
- Talks, public programs and cultural events
- A restored industrial building with strong architectural character
- A perfect cultural stop between CaixaForum, Reina Sofía and Barrio de las Letras
The space has around 4,000 square metres and its rehabilitation has received several architecture awards, including recognition from the Spanish Architecture and Urbanism Biennial and COAM.
Worth the trip
What makes Serrería Belga special is its transformation: from a working industrial sawmill to a cultural space inside one of Madrid’s most important art districts. It shows a different side of the city — not royal collections or grand masterpieces, but adaptive reuse, contemporary programming and the creative life of urban heritage.
For Artlovers, it is worth including because it connects perfectly with the idea of cultural travel: art is not only inside museums. Sometimes it appears in old factories, restored buildings, neighbourhood routes and spaces where the city reinvents itself.
ArtLovers Tip
Don’t visit it as a “secondary” space. Combine it with the Prado-Reina Sofía-CaixaForum axis and use it as a contemporary pause: the industrial architecture makes every exhibition feel more urban, raw and Madrid.
Opening hours are generally listed as Tuesday to Friday, 11:00–20:00; Saturday, 12:00–20:00; Sunday, 12:00–18:00; closed Monday, although each exhibition may have specific details.
