Fondazione dell’Albero d’Oro

Venice, Italy

A secret Venetian palazzo on the Grand Canal, brought back to life as a house of art, memory, and contemporary encounters. Fondazione dell’Albero d’Oro at Palazzo Vendramin Grimani is Venice at its most intimate: historic, elegant, and quietly alive.

Fondazione dell’Albero d’Oro was created in 2019 to restore life and soul to Palazzo Vendramin Grimani, a historic residence overlooking the Grand Canal in Venice. The foundation describes the palazzo as “a home on the Grand Canal, a window to the world,” and its mission is to make the building live again through exhibitions, guided visits, talks, residencies, and cultural programming.

The palazzo itself is a remarkable example of Venetian proto-Renaissance architecture and, after restoration, has been opened to the public for the first time as a cultural space. It is located in San Polo, 2033, with access from Campo San Polo.

What you’ll see here

This is not a blockbuster museum experience. It feels more like entering a Venetian home where every room carries history.

You may discover:

  • Temporary contemporary art exhibitions
  • Historic interiors and restored architectural details
  • Guided tours through the palazzo
  • Talks, conferences, residencies, and cultural events
  • A rare view into Venice’s domestic and collecting culture

Worth the trip

Yes — especially if you want to experience Venice beyond the obvious masterpieces.

What makes Fondazione dell’Albero d’Oro special is that it transforms a private Venetian residence into a living cultural space. It does not feel like a museum trying to impress you; it feels like Venice opening one of its doors.

For Artlovers, this is exactly the kind of place worth discovering: a palazzo where history is not frozen, contemporary art is not isolated, and the city itself becomes part of the exhibition.

ArtLovers Tip

The best way to enjoy it is slowly. Arrive from Campo San Polo, let the walk become part of the visit, and pay attention to the transition from Venice’s streets into the quiet rhythm of the palazzo. Don’t visit only for the exhibition. Visit for the dialogue between art and place — the floors, windows, rooms, silence, and Grand Canal atmosphere are part of the experience.
