Berlin’s essential stop for photography and visual media. C/O Berlin is where images become culture: documentary, fashion, portrait, archive, experiment, politics and contemporary visual life.

C/O Berlin is located in the Amerika Haus at Hardenbergstraße 22–24, near Zoologischer Garten in Charlottenburg. It is a nonprofit exhibition space dedicated to photography and visual media, with international exhibitions, artist talks, film screenings, guided tours, education programmes and publications.

The building adds another layer. Amerika Haus carries postwar cultural history, and C/O Berlin gives it a contemporary role: a place to look at how images shape memory, identity, desire, journalism, fashion, power and everyday life.

What you’ll see here

At C/O Berlin, expect temporary exhibitions rather than a permanent collection. The programme can move from major photographers to younger talents, from documentary practice to fashion, staged image-making, experimental media and the politics of seeing.

You may encounter:

  • Contemporary and historical photography
  • Portrait, documentary, fashion and conceptual image-making
  • Visual media, film screenings and talks
  • Emerging photographers through talent programmes
  • A strong bookshop / publication culture
  • A very accessible museum experience near Zoo Station

Worth the trip

Yes — especially if photography matters to you.

What makes C/O Berlin special is its focus. Berlin has many museums for painting, archaeology and contemporary art, but C/O Berlin gives images their own stage. It understands photography not as secondary art, but as one of the main languages of modern life.

For Artlovers, it is worth including because travel today is shaped by images — what we remember, share, believe and desire. C/O Berlin helps you look at that image-world more consciously.

ArtLovers Tip

Visit it when you want a sharper, image-led Berlin experience. Pair C/O Berlin with Helmut Newton Foundation, Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, Bikini Berlin, or a walk around Charlottenburg. It is especially good for photography lovers, visual culture people and anyone who wants Berlin beyond Museum Island.

This is usually a medium-density visit. Allow around 60–90 minutes for one exhibition cycle, or closer to 2 hours if you read texts, visit the bookshop and attend a talk or screening. It is easier to absorb than Hamburger Bahnhof or Museum Island, but visually rich.
