A private contemporary art collection hidden inside a former Nazi-era bunker. Sammlung Boros is one of Berlin’s most unforgettable art experiences: brutal concrete, guided silence, and contemporary art installed where history still feels physically present.

Sammlung Boros / Boros Collection is located at Reinhardtstraße 20, in Berlin-Mitte, inside the former Reichsbahnbunker Friedrichstraße. The collection belongs to Karen and Christian Boros and has been open to the public in the bunker since 2008, after the building was renovated and transformed into a private exhibition space.

This is not a normal museum. The bunker’s past — air-raid shelter, storage space, club culture, private collection — remains part of the atmosphere. The art is installed across multiple floors and rooms, often in direct dialogue with the architecture: thick concrete walls, low light, heavy doors, traces of use, pressure and secrecy.

What you’ll see here

At Sammlung Boros, visits are only possible through guided tours booked in advance.

The official booking page lists small-group tours of around 1.5 hours, available in German or English.

You may encounter:

  • Contemporary art from the Boros Collection
  • Sculpture, installation, photography, painting and spatial works
  • Artists such as Olafur Eliasson, Wolfgang Tillmans, Alicja Kwade, Anne Imhof, Cyprien Gaillard, Bunny Rogers and others, depending on the current presentation
  • A guided experience through bunker rooms, not an open museum route
  • Art that feels intensified by architecture, memory and physical constraint
  • One of Berlin’s most powerful private-collection visits

Worth the trip

Yes — absolutely, if you can get a reservation.

What makes Sammlung Boros special is the tension between private collecting and public history. You are not just seeing contemporary art; you are entering a bunker that carries Berlin’s 20th-century memory and watching artists respond, resist or echo that atmosphere.

For Artlovers, it is one of Berlin’s essential contemporary art experiences because it captures something the city does better than almost anywhere else: turning difficult architecture, layered history and experimental art into a visit that stays with you long after you leave.

ArtLovers Tip

Book as early as possible. This is one of those Berlin art experiences where you cannot simply arrive and enter. Choose an English tour if needed, and treat the visit almost like a performance: timed, guided, controlled and unforgettable. This is a compact but intense visit. The tour lasts around 90 minutes, but it feels dense because the architecture, the history and the artworks all demand attention. It is not ideal for a casual drop-in; it is best for visitors who want a deeper, more atmospheric contemporary art experience.
