Centre Cultural-Llibreria Blanquerna
A Catalan cultural bridge in the middle of Madrid — part bookshop, part exhibition space, part meeting point for ideas, language, literature, and contemporary culture.
Centre Cultural-Llibreria Blanquerna is the cultural centre and bookshop of the Generalitat de Catalunya in Madrid. Opened in 1993, its mission has been to share Catalan culture in the Spanish capital through exhibitions, book presentations, conferences, language activities, and cultural encounters.
Since 2016, the space has emphasized its dual identity as both a cultural centre and a bookshop: one area for exhibitions, talks, and public events, and another dedicated to books, especially Catalan literature and culture
What you’ll see here
This is not a traditional art gallery or museum. It is a cultural space where art, books, language, and public conversation meet.
You may find:
- Temporary exhibitions
- Book presentations and literary events
- Talks, conferences, and cultural debates
- A specialist bookshop with Catalan literature, poetry, essays, children’s books, comics, design, architecture, photography, and books by Catalan authors translated into other languages
- Catalan language activities through its Espai de Llengües
Worth the trip
Yes — especially if you want to understand Madrid as a city of cultural dialogues, not just museums.
What makes Centre Cultural-Llibreria Blanquerna special is its role as a meeting point between Catalonia and Madrid. It offers a more intimate, literary, and civic experience than the usual art route.
ArtLovers Tip
Sometimes the most meaningful places are not the biggest museums, but the spaces where identities, books, languages, and contemporary culture quietly meet.
