Exhibition Highlights - What you’ll see
Discover the world of Károly Ferenczy (1862–1917), a central figure who helped shape the modern art scene in Hungary.
As a leading member of the famous Nagybánya artists’ colony, Ferenczy was a true pioneer. This is his first-ever retrospective in France, celebrating a painter who found beauty in everything from quiet everyday moments to the grand scale of nature.
What makes Ferenczy’s work so special is that it doesn’t fit into just one category. While he drew inspiration from Impressionism, Symbolism, and Naturalism, he created a style that was uniquely his own. He was a master of "plein air" painting—working directly outdoors—where he used vibrant colors to capture the spirit of the Hungarian countryside. In many of his landscapes, you’ll notice the sun itself takes center stage, bathing his subjects in a warm, distinctive light.
This exhibition features nearly 140 works, offering a look at every side of his versatile career. From intimate family portraits and nudes to biblical scenes and even playful caricatures, you’ll see how Ferenczy’s diverse approach and deep connection to nature made him a cornerstone of Hungarian Modernism. We invite you to step into his world and experience the light and color of a master at work.
