A 14th-century Gothic shell housing the friction of modern Spanish painting. Beneath polychrome wooden ceilings where the Borgias once walked, the silence of the stone invites a slower, more deliberate kind of looking.
The transition from the narrow streets of Valencia’s old quarter into the Palau Joan de Valeriola is a lesson in medieval proportions. This 14th-century manor, once home to the noble Valleriola family, strips away the city’s noise with its austere stone masonry and soaring Gothic arches. The restoration has left the building’s history exposed; you move through a sequence of diaphanous halls where the weight of heavy timber and ancient lintels provides a grounded, solemn stage for the contemporary canvases of the Chirivella Soriano collection.
You're watching the way soft light filters through deep-set windows to strike the original alfarjes. These decorated wooden ceilings, painted with heraldic shields and Cufic script, create a dense, rhythmic canopy above the clinical white walls of the exhibition spaces. The air feels cool and still, encouraging a rhythmic pace as visitors drift between the medieval shadows and the sharp, modern lighting of the galleries.

ArtLovers Tip
Pay close attention to the transition between the second and third floors; the scale shifts, and you can get a closer look at the craftsmanship of the timber roof structures that have held the palace together for six hundred years.
