IVAM Art Modern Institute Museum of Valencia

Valencia’s essential stop for modern and contemporary art. IVAM — Institut Valencià d’Art Modern is where the city shows its most serious, experimental and international cultural side.
Opened in 1989 in the El Carmen neighbourhood, IVAM was one of Spain’s first major museums dedicated to modern and contemporary art. Its main venue, IVAM Centre Julio González, is located at Carrer de Guillem de Castro, 118, just outside Valencia’s old town.
The museum’s identity is deeply connected to Julio González, the pioneering sculptor who helped transform modern sculpture through iron, line and space. IVAM’s collection began with major works and archives related to González, alongside the legacy of Valencian artist Ignacio Pinazo.

Worth the trip
Yes — especially if you want to understand Valencia beyond beaches, design and architecture.
What makes IVAM special is that it gives Valencia a serious modern-art voice. It is not just a local museum; it is a place where Spanish and international modernity meet through sculpture, archives, photography, politics and contemporary experimentation.
ArtLovers Tip
Visit IVAM before or after wandering through El Carmen. It works beautifully as a cultural anchor for the old town: medieval streets outside, radical modernity inside.
For Artlovers, IVAM is worth including because it adds depth to the city. Valencia becomes not only beautiful and Mediterranean, but also intellectual, restless and artistically ambitious.
