A Chelsea gallery built for serious contemporary art at full scale. Hauser & Wirth Chelsea is one of New York’s essential gallery stops — free to enter, but often as ambitious as a museum exhibition.

Hauser & Wirth New York, 22nd Street is located at 542 West 22nd Street, in the heart of the West Chelsea Arts District, close to the High Line and surrounded by some of New York’s most important contemporary galleries. The building is Hauser & Wirth’s first purpose-built, ground-up gallery building and was designed in collaboration with Selldorf Architects.

The space feels very Chelsea: large, precise, architectural, and made for ambitious exhibitions. It is part of Hauser & Wirth’s international network, but this New York venue has its own weight — a place where global contemporary art meets the city’s gallery ecosystem.

  • Major international artists and artist estates
  • Large-scale works that need serious architectural space
  • A refined Chelsea gallery atmosphere
  • Free access during public opening hours

Worth the trip

Yes — especially if you want to understand New York beyond museums.

What makes Hauser & Wirth Chelsea special is its combination of scale, curatorial ambition and global influence. It is a commercial gallery, but the exhibitions often feel institutional: researched, beautifully installed, and culturally serious.

ArtLovers Tip

Pair it with David Zwirner, Dia Chelsea, Gagosian, Pace, the High Line, and nearby West Chelsea galleries. This is one of the best areas in New York to understand how contemporary art, architecture, collectors and future museum conversations move together. For Artlovers, it is worth including because Chelsea shows contemporary art in real time — not only where art is preserved, but where artists are positioned, estates are reinterpreted, collectors move, curators look, and tomorrow’s art history begins.
