A Museum Mile gem where design becomes a way of thinking. Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum is the New York museum that makes you look differently at objects, rooms, graphics, textiles, technology and everyday life.

Located at 2 East 91st Street, inside the landmark Andrew Carnegie Mansion, Cooper Hewitt is the only museum in the United States devoted exclusively to historical and contemporary design. Its collection includes more than 215,000 design objects spanning 30 centuries, from textiles and drawings to furniture, product design, wallcoverings, graphics, decorative arts and digital design.

The setting matters. Unlike a neutral white-cube museum, Cooper Hewitt places design inside a former Gilded Age mansion, with galleries, garden, historic interiors and contemporary exhibition spaces working together. It feels intimate, elegant and very New York.

What you’ll see here

At Cooper Hewitt, the visit is less about “masterpieces” and more about how things are imagined, made and used. It is a museum for curious people: designers, architects, fashion lovers, entrepreneurs, makers, and anyone interested in how objects shape behaviour.

You may experience:

  • Historical and contemporary design
  • Furniture, textiles, wallcoverings, graphics and product design
  • Architecture and decorative arts
  • Interactive design experiences
  • Temporary exhibitions on materials, innovation, craft and social impact
  • The museum garden and design shop
  • A quieter Museum Mile stop near The Met, Guggenheim, Neue Galerie and The Jewish Museum

Worth the trip

Yes — especially if you want New York beyond painting museums and blue-chip galleries.

What makes Cooper Hewitt special is its point of view. It treats design not as decoration, but as a force that shapes how we live: our homes, tools, cities, interfaces, clothes, rituals and identities.

ArtLovers Tip

Don’t visit it looking only for beauty. Visit it asking: Who designed this? Why this material? Who used it? What problem did it solve? What desire did it create? That is when Cooper Hewitt becomes fascinating.

For Artlovers, it is worth including because it expands the art journey. A museum like this reminds us that creativity is not only something we frame and admire — it is something we sit on, wear, touch, read, open, collect, use and carry through everyday life.
