Madrid as a time machine: the same street, two moments, one image — and the city suddenly remembers itself.

A beautiful Madrid stop: accessible, emotional and deeply local — the kind of exhibition that makes you walk out seeing your own city with older eyes.

Exhibition Highlights - What you'll see

Fotomontajes de Andrés Valentín Pérez Serén.

This is a visual journey through Madrid’s past and present using refotografía — rephotography. The technique consists of taking a new photograph from the same point of view as an old image, then merging both moments into a single composition.

The result is emotional and strangely magical: old Madrid and contemporary Madrid appear together in the same street, square, façade or landscape. The exhibition creates a direct visual dialogue between what has disappeared and what remains, between memory and daily life.

You’ll see Madrid as a city that both changes and does not change. Buildings transform, people vanish, clothes change, trades disappear — but the soul of certain places still survives.

Worth the trip

Because this exhibition makes urban memory visible.

Madrid entre épocas is not only about nostalgia. It asks something more powerful: what do cities remember when their inhabitants forget? Through these photomontages, Madrid becomes a layered city, where grandparents, childhoods, disappeared shops, old neighbourhoods and today’s streets coexist for a second.

For Artlovers, it is worth visiting because it turns photography into an act of care. It rescues fragments of the city before they disappear completely — and reminds us that a place is never only architecture. It is time, people, stories and memory.

How to experience it

Look first at the people.

The buildings are fascinating, but the human figures are often the most moving part: clothes, gestures, workers, passers-by, children, lives that crossed the same streets we walk today. Then look at the edges of each image, where past and present meet. That border is where the emotion happens.

This is a perfect exhibition to pair with a walk through Madrid afterwards. Once you leave, the whole city starts to look like an archive.
