Look closely at the work titled Cloves Numbing Warming Soothing Strong; the artist has actually embedded individual cloves into the paint, adding a faint, spicy scent to the visual experience.

Exhibition Highlights - What you'll see

Lubaina Himid, a pioneer of the British Black Arts Movement, steps away from her typical figurative storytelling in this collaborative installation with Magda Stawarska. At its heart is the Zanzibar series, a group of abstract diptychs painted in 1999 as a tribute to Himid’s birthplace—a landscape she left as an infant following her father's early death. These canvases, once solitary reflections on grief and belonging, are now transformed by Stawarska’s multi-layered soundscape, creating a bridge between the artist’s past and her current creative partnership.

You're watching nine pairs of canvases float within the gallery, suspended amidst geometric forms and rhythmic zigzag patterns. The air is thick with a 38-minute libretto of voices, operatic fragments, and the sounds of Taraab music, echoing through the room like a distant radio broadcast from the island. You see actual cloves embedded in the paint and the delicate splatter of rose-colored acrylic, physical anchors for memories of a childhood that was largely imagined through the stories of others.

Worth the trip

  • A rare abstraction: See a definitive departure from Himid's narrative style through a suite of paintings she describes as unlike anything else in her career.
  • Sensory storytelling: Experience the interplay between visual art and an eight-channel soundscape that uses archival BBC clips and narrated guidebooks to evoke a specific sense of place.
  • A Venice preview: Visit this London iteration of the artists' partnership during the same summer they represent Great Britain at the Venice Biennale.

How to experience it

Allow yourself at least forty minutes to fully absorb the soundscape, which is designed to be experienced in its entirety alongside the visual works. Move slowly between the floating canvases, noticing how the light catches the textured materials like shells and nets. Afterward, take a short walk to Regent’s Park to sit by the water, letting the installation’s themes of displacement and oceanic memory settle in the quiet of the city.
