Collection in Focus | Modern European Currents is on view at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, United States, from 15 July 2025 to 10 January 2027. The exhibition presents works from the Guggenheim collection by artists including Natalia Goncharova, Vasily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, focusing on a decisive period when European artists rethought what painting could do.

The display looks at the early 20th century as a moment of artistic exchange and experimentation. Across Europe, artists used intense colour, simplified forms, abstraction, spiritual ideas, nature, folk traditions and wider global references to respond to modern life. The result is not one single movement, but a set of currents that pushed painting beyond representation.

At the Guggenheim, this collection focus works especially well because abstraction is part of the museum’s DNA. The show gives visitors a compact way to understand how modern European painting helped prepare the ground for the non-objective and abstract art that became central to the Guggenheim story.
