Description
Carlos Cartaxo. In-sítu at CentroCentro in Madrid, Spain, presents a new site-specific installation by the Valladolid-born artist. Part of the EPICENTRO program for mid-career creators, the work occupies the building's main courtyard, turning the architectural environment into an active participant rather than a neutral backdrop.
The installation functions as a hybrid between expanded painting and freestanding sculpture. Cartaxo uses a series of three-dimensional reliefs characterized by sharp angles and fragmented surfaces that seem to fold and unfold. These geometric forms break the rigidity of the hall, creating an assembly that presents multiple points of view simultaneously as the viewer moves through the space.
Drawing inspiration from Kurt Schwitters' Merzbau and Renaissance wall reliefs, Cartaxo explores the transience of human experience. By manipulating light and physical pathing, the artist investigates contemporary abstraction and new constructivism, using mass and substance to reflect the speed and uncertainty of the present day.
