About
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) is a major cultural and public-space destination in Athens, designed by Renzo Piano and opened in 2016. It brings together the National Library of Greece, Greek National Opera, extensive gardens and public spaces.
Instead of ancient monuments, archaeological sites and traditional museums, you encounter 21st-century Athens: bold architecture, contemporary landscape design, cultural programming and an enormous public park.
Renzo Piano's design creates a strong connection between the cultural buildings and the surrounding landscape. The famous Lighthouse sits on top of the Cultural Centre and offers expansive views towards Athens and the sea.
The project also transformed a previously underused area into one of Athens' most important public cultural spaces.
Worth the trip
Because SNFCC is less a conventional cultural institution than a complete urban experience: extraordinary architecture, Mediterranean landscaping, public art, performances and views towards the sea.
