Description
Rather than romanticising landscape into mist or sublime drama, Waldmüller often makes nature feel startlingly specific. Trees, rock, sunlight and distance are rendered with a clarity that anticipates later realism while remaining firmly rooted in early 19th-century Central Europe. The small display is an effective introduction to an artist rarely seen in Britain. It also positions Austrian landscape painting within a wider European context.
Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller (1793–1865) was a leading Austrian painter of the Biedermeier era. He was equally successful in portraiture, genre painting and still life, and became influential as both artist and teacher.
