Artlovers tip

Visit Novecento between the Renaissance museums rather than treating it as a separate contemporary-art destination. It creates a fascinating historical bridge between Florence's past and its modern artistic identity.

Don’t miss The Alberto Della Ragione Collection, particularly the works by Giorgio de Chirico and Giorgio Morandi.

About

Museo Novecento occupies the former Spedale delle Leopoldine in Piazza Santa Maria Novella and is dedicated to Italian art of the 20th and 21st centuries. Its programme combines civic collections, temporary exhibitions, installations and special projects.

Museo Novecento opened in 2014 in the former Spedale delle Leopoldine, directly overlooking Piazza Santa Maria Novella. The museum focuses on the art of the 20th and 21st centuries, with particular emphasis on Italian art of the first half of the 20th century.

The museum combines its civic collections with a substantial programme of temporary exhibitions, installations, special projects, talks, screenings and performances.

Highly recommended — particularly as a complement to Florence's Renaissance collections.

Museo Novecento is not the museum to choose if you have only a few hours in Florence and want the city's canonical masterpieces. But once you have seen the Uffizi, Accademia and the major Renaissance sites, Novecento becomes extremely valuable.

It answers a question many visitors to Florence don't think to ask: What happened to Florence's art after the Renaissance?
