A global gallery in Basel’s historic heart — intimate, elegant, and perfectly placed between the city’s museums and the energy of Art Basel. Hauser & Wirth Basel brings international art-world power into a small, focused Old Town space.

Hauser & Wirth Basel is located at Luftgässlein 4, in the heart of Basel’s Old Town cultural district. The gallery occupies the ground floor of a former silk ribbon factory built in the 1880s, giving the space a character that feels very Basel: historic, discreet, precise, and quietly ambitious.

The Basel gallery opened in June 2024, adding a new Swiss chapter to Hauser & Wirth’s global network. The space includes an exhibition area and showroom, with a program focused on carefully curated, often historically grounded exhibitions under the direction of Carlo Knöll.

What you’ll see here

At Hauser & Wirth Basel, expect a more intimate experience than the gallery’s large international venues. This is not a huge warehouse-like space; it is a concentrated gallery where each exhibition can feel almost cabinet-like: close, considered, and highly curated.

You may encounter:

  • Modern and contemporary art
  • Historical exhibitions by major artists
  • Museum-level works in a gallery setting
  • A refined Old Town gallery atmosphere
  • A strong stop during Art Basel week
  • A quiet counterpoint to the scale of Messe Basel and the major museums

Worth the trip

Yes if you want to understand Basel not only through museums and the fair, but through its gallery ecosystem.

What makes Hauser & Wirth Basel special is the tension between scale and intimacy. Hauser & Wirth is one of the most powerful names in the global art world, but in Basel it appears in a quieter, more concentrated form — inside a historic building, in a city where collecting, scholarship, museums and the market are deeply connected.

ArtLovers Tip

For Artlovers, it is worth including because it shows Basel’s true art DNA: serious, international, discreet, and deeply embedded in the rhythms of art history and the market.

Visit it as part of a Basel Old Town art walk. Pair it with Kunstmuseum Basel, Kunsthalle Basel, nearby galleries, and then contrast it with the scale of Art Basel or Fondation Beyeler.
