Kunstmuseum Basel is delighted to present the work of Helen Frankenthaler, a true trailblazer who redefined what abstract painting could be. Featuring more than fifty pieces, this exhibition captures the vibrant energy of one of the most influential American artists of the post-war era. This is a special milestone: it is the largest display of her art ever held in Europe and her very first solo museum show in Switzerland.

When she was just twenty-three years old, Frankenthaler changed art history with her revolutionary "soak-stain" technique. By pouring thinned-out paint onto raw canvases laid across the floor, she created massive, glowing compositions where the color and the fabric literally became one. She moved around her work with sponges and brushes, finding a beautiful balance between spontaneous accidents and careful control. Her paintings continue to captivate us today with their poetic use of color and daring designs.

The exhibition brings together forty paintings and fifteen works on paper, tracing her creative journey over six decades. It also offers a unique look at how she was inspired by the greats, from the masters of the Italian Renaissance to modern icons like Picasso and Matisse. Through her travels across Europe and her time in New York museums, Frankenthaler was constantly learning from artists like Titian and Monet.
