Frederiksbergmuseerne

A constellation of small museums that make Frederiksberg feel like Copenhagen’s quieter cultural garden. Frederiksbergmuseerne is not one museum, but a group of intimate, atmospheric places where art, literature, satire, history and underground installations meet.

About

Frederiksbergmuseerne — The Frederiksberg Museums brings together four cultural venues in Frederiksberg: Cisternerne, Bakkehuset, STORM and Møstings. Together, they offer a very different museum experience from Copenhagen’s big institutions: smaller, more local, more atmospheric, and spread through one of the city’s most elegant districts.

The identity of the group is charmingly varied: Cisternerne is an underground exhibition space in a former water reservoir; Bakkehuset is a historic house connected to Danish Golden Age literary culture; STORM focuses on humour and satire; and Møstings works as an art venue in Frederiksberg’s historic setting.

What you'll see here

At Frederiksbergmuseerne, the experience depends on which venue you choose. It is best understood as a mini cultural route, not a single museum visit.

You may encounter:

  • Cisternerne — immersive contemporary art in a dark underground former reservoir
  • Bakkehuset — Danish literary history, Golden Age atmosphere and historic interiors
  • STORM — humour, satire, cartoons and Danish popular culture
  • Møstings — smaller art exhibitions and cultural programming
  • A quieter Frederiksberg rhythm, away from the central museum crowds
  • A mix of art, literature, design, architecture, humour and local history

The official opening-hours page lists each venue separately, so check the timetable before going; the four sites do not always function like one unified museum with identical hours.

Worth the trip

Yes — especially if you want Copenhagen beyond the obvious museums.

What makes Frederiksbergmuseerne special is the variety of cultural experiences held together by place. It is not about one blockbuster collection; it is about discovering Frederiksberg through different emotional registers: underground darkness, historic rooms, satire, gardens, small exhibitions and local memory.

For Artlovers, it is worth including because it expands the Copenhagen art map. After the big names — Louisiana, SMK, Glyptoteket, Kunsthal Charlottenborg — Frederiksbergmuseerne gives you something more intimate: culture as atmosphere, neighbourhood and surprise.

Artlovers Tip

Start with Cisternerne if you want the most unusual experience. It is the one that feels closest to an art pilgrimage: underground, damp, silent, immersive and completely unlike a conventional gallery. Then add Bakkehuset or STORM depending on whether you want literary atmosphere or humour.

This is a flexible cultural route. One venue can be a 30–60 minute visit, while combining two or three places can become a half-day Frederiksberg plan.

For Artlovers, the best version is not “see everything fast,” but choose the mood:

Cisternerne for immersive art, Bakkehuset for history and literature, STORM for humour and satire, Møstings for small-scale exhibitions.
