Artlovers Tip

Don't arrive just before closing Forte Belvedere is a location where time of day matters.

If possible, arrive in the late afternoon, see the exhibition, explore the ramparts and stay for the changing light over Florence. The combination of contemporary art, historic stone architecture and Florence's changing light makes Forte Belvedere particularly atmospheric.

Don’t miss The ramparts and panoramic terraces. The view is an essential part of the experience, not simply a bonus.

About

The Forte di San Giorgio, better known as Forte Belvedere, was built between 1590 and 1595 during the reign of Ferdinando I de' Medici, based on designs associated with Bernardo Buontalenti, Don Giovanni de' Medici and Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane.

The elegant Palazzina di Belvedere predates the fortress and is generally attributed to Bartolomeo Ammannati. The complex was connected to Palazzo Pitti through the Boboli Gardens, providing a strategic route in times of danger.

In its contemporary role, Forte Belvedere has become an important venue for temporary art exhibitions and cultural events. You don't just visit an exhibition. You climb above the city, enter a historic fortress, experience contemporary art and look back at Florence from an extraordinary position.

The location itself creates part of the cultural experience.

Worth the trip

For the combination of Medici architecture + contemporary art + panoramic views over Florence. Few cultural locations offer such a strong relationship between art, history and landscape.
