About
Skulpturenpark Waldfrieden in Wuppertal is one of Germany's most distinctive sculpture destinations, created by British-German sculptor Tony Cragg and operated by the nonprofit Cragg Foundation. Cragg acquired the abandoned Waldfrieden estate in 2006 and transformed its wooded hillside, historic buildings and gardens into a permanent setting for modern and contemporary sculpture; the park opened in 2008. Today, visitors encounter works by artists including Tony Cragg, Henry Moore, Joan Miró, Joseph Beuys and Thomas Schütte alongside temporary exhibitions in indoor galleries. What makes Waldfrieden especially compelling is the relationship between sculpture and nature: changing light, foliage, weather and terrain continuously alter how the works are perceived. For art travellers, it is an outstanding Art Escape and a destination worth seeking out for sculpture, landscape and Slow Art.
Worth the trip
Because Waldfrieden turns sculpture into a walk through woodland, slopes and changing light. Founded by Tony Cragg, it brings major modern and contemporary sculpture into direct dialogue with nature rather than isolating it inside galleries.
