A world-class contemporary art museum in the historic heart of Cáceres. Museum of Contemporary Art Helga de Alvear is proof that some of Spain’s most powerful art experiences happen far from the obvious routes.

The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Helga de Alvear is located in Cáceres, Extremadura, and presents a selection from the Helga de Alvear Collection, one of the most important contemporary art collections in Europe, with more than 3,000 works featuring renowned artists such as Goya, Olafur Eliasson, Picasso, Louise Bourgeois, Kandinsky, Helena Almeida, and Ai Weiwei. In February 2021, the museum unveiled its new architectural marvel crafted by Emilio Tuñón and his team, a structure acclaimed with international accolades. This edifice offers a juxtaposition of modernity and tradition, seamlessly blending into the historic heart of the city. Adjacent to the main building, a secondary structure hosts dynamic temporary exhibitions, refreshing every few months.

Helga de Alvear was a German art dealer and collector residing in Spain, a country where she started and has developed her international professional career. Her vision of promoting dialogue through art is palpable in every corner, inviting contemplation and discourse. A visit here is not just a viewing experience but a journey into the pulse of contemporary creativity.

The museum combines the historic Casa Grande, a modernist building from the early 20th century, with a contemporary architectural extension designed by Emilio Tuñón Arquitectos. The new building creates a striking dialogue between white concrete, light, inner courtyards, and the historic fabric of Cáceres.

What you’ll see here

This is not a small local museum. It is a serious contemporary art destination with an international collection that moves across painting, sculpture, photography, video, drawing, installation, conceptual art, and new media.

You may encounter:

  • Works by major Spanish, European and American contemporary artists
  • Painting, sculpture, photography, video and installation
  • Artists such as Picasso, Louise Bourgeois, Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Robert Motherwell, Tàpies, Ai Weiwei, Carmen Laffón, Luis Gordillo and many others
  • Temporary exhibitions by major contemporary voices
  • A calm, architectural visit where the building and the collection breathe together

The best way to enjoy it is slowly. Give yourself around 1.5 to 2.5 hours, especially if you want to experience both the collection and the temporary exhibition without rushing.

Worth the trip

Yes — absolutely. This is one of the strongest reasons to travel to Cáceres for art.

What makes Museum of Contemporary Art Helga de Alvear special is the combination of collection + architecture + location. You are not seeing contemporary art in a predictable big-city setting; you are seeing it inside one of Spain’s most atmospheric historic cities.

ArtLovers Tip

Opening hours change by season. From October to May, the museum is generally open Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00–14:00 and 17:00–20:00, and Sunday, 10:00–14:30. From June to September, afternoon hours shift to 18:00–21:00. It closes on Mondays, except some holidays.

For Artlovers, it is worth the trip because it changes the map. It proves that contemporary art is not only in Madrid, Barcelona, Paris or London. Sometimes the most powerful art journey is to a quieter city — where a collection, a building and a destination come together and make you see Spain differently.
