Hauser & Wirth Menorca
At a glance

A contemporary art island in the middle of Mahón harbour. Hauser & Wirth Menorca is where blue-chip art, Menorcan landscape, restored heritage and slow Mediterranean travel become one experience.

What you'll see

At Hauser & Wirth Menorca, expect seasonal exhibitions rather than a permanent collection. The experience is more than a gallery stop: it is art plus island, architecture, garden and harbour.

You may see:

  • Contemporary art exhibitions by major international artists
  • Sculpture, installation, painting, video and site-responsive works
  • The Piet Oudolf garden, designed as part of the island experience
  • Restored sandstone architecture and historic hospital buildings
  • Learning activities, talks, screenings and community programmes
  • Cantina, the outdoor restaurant and bar focused on Menorcan cuisine
Artlovers Tip

Don’t treat this as just another gallery. Plan it as a small cultural excursion: boat crossing, exhibition, garden, sea views and maybe lunch or sunset drinks. It is one of the best examples of art becoming a journey.

This is usually a medium visit, but the full experience deserves time. Allow around 90 minutes to 2 hours for the exhibition, garden and island atmosphere — longer if you add Cantina or attend an event.

Because the programme is seasonal and access depends on boats, always check opening dates, current exhibitions and transport before going. It is especially worth booking ahead in summer.

About

Hauser & Wirth Menorca is located on Illa del Rei / Isla del Rey, a small island in the natural harbour of Mahón, Menorca. The gallery occupies restored outbuildings connected to the island’s historic naval hospital, creating a cultural destination that combines contemporary art, education, conservation, architecture, landscape and local community.

The project opened in 2021 and is part of Hauser & Wirth’s international network, but the Menorca space feels very different from a city gallery. Here, the journey by boat, the old hospital complex, the gardens, the sea air and the restaurant all become part of the visit.

Worth the trip

Yes — absolutely, especially if you are in Menorca.

What makes Hauser & Wirth Menorca special is the way it changes the rhythm of art viewing. You do not just enter a white cube; you cross water, arrive on an island, walk through restored architecture, see contemporary art, feel the garden, and look back toward Mahón.

For Artlovers, it is almost a perfect case study: art is not separated from travel, place, food, landscape or time. It turns a gallery visit into a Mediterranean cultural ritual — slow, beautiful, precise and memorable.
