Tàpies in Menorca: matter, signs, silence and the radical act of learning how to look.

Exhibition Highlights - What you'll see

This exhibition is dedicated to Antoni Tàpies, one of the essential artists of postwar European art. The title comes from his 1967 text “El joc de saber mirar”, where Tàpies invited readers to exercise looking as a deeper practice — not just seeing surfaces, but opening attention to what is usually ignored.

At Cayón Menorca, the show focuses on Tàpies’ mature language: matter, gesture, symbols, signs, rough textures, objects, silence and spiritual tension. Local coverage describes the exhibition as bringing together 24 works from the artist’s period of full creative maturity.

Worth the trip

Because Tàpies teaches something very Artlovers: looking is not passive.

In a world of fast images, his work asks for the opposite: slowness, attention, touch, silence. A cross, a stain, a number, a rough surface or a fragment of material can become a whole universe if you give it enough time.

For Menorca, this is especially beautiful. The island’s light, stone, dryness and quiet intensity fit Tàpies perfectly. Seeing his work in a former cinema-palace in Maó gives the exhibition a special atmosphere: not a blockbuster, but a focused encounter with one of Spain’s most important artists.

How to experience it

Don’t visit it looking for “what it represents.”

Visit it looking for what it reveals. Stand close to the surfaces. Look at the texture, the marks, the tension between emptiness and matter. Then step back and let the work become almost meditative.

Tàpies is not difficult because he hides meaning. He is difficult because he asks you to slow down enough to see what was already there.

The Game of Knowing How to Look

Artlovers Tip

Compact but visually intense. You can visit it in around 30–40 minutes, but allow 60 minutes if you want to really enter Tàpies’ slow, material way of looking.

A must-see Menorca 2026 stop: quiet, powerful and perfectly placed — Tàpies reminding us that art begins when we stop consuming images and start learning how to look.
