At his core, Erwin was a freethinker driven by a passion for personal freedom. He was a tireless champion for identity, gender equality, and the beauty of the human body in all its forms. This exhibition invites you to explore his life's work through the lens of his activism, showing how he used his art to speak up for the things he believed in.

The exhibition follows Erwin’s creative journey, beginning with his early, candid black-and-white photos of gay rights protests in the 1980s. You’ll see how his love for composition eventually led him into the studio, where he could control every detail of his frame. The collection features a mix of famous and rarely-seen works, from the striking Chessmen and Royal Blood series to the emotional Grief and Skin Deep. We’ve also included his unique collaborations with the Dutch National Ballet and his provocative series like SM in Holland and Fashion Victims, offering a complete look at a truly extraordinary artist.
