At a glance

For five days, Amsterdam becomes one connected art route—opening studios, galleries and unexpected spaces that usually remain outside the museum circuit.

Why go

Amsterdam Art Week brings the city’s contemporary-art ecosystem together rather than concentrating everything inside a conventional fair. Major museums appear alongside commercial galleries, artist-run spaces, residencies and corporate collections, creating opportunities to discover both established figures and artists at the beginning of their careers. The return of Rijksakademie Open Studios gives the 2026 edition particular importance. Visitors can encounter new work by international resident artists inside one of Europe’s most influential artistic development programmes.

You'll see

  • More than 70 contemporary-art exhibitions across approximately 60 locations.
  • Gallery openings, performances, screenings and special installations.
  • Artist talks, curatorial conversations and guided neighbourhood routes.

Pace of visit

Ideally: 2–3 full days

Minimum: one complete day

Don't miss

Wednesday 18 November — Opening and Rijksakademie Open Studios: resident artists present newly developed work inside their studios.

Thursday 19 November — Gallery Night: participating galleries open simultaneously from 5–9 pm.

Friday 20 November — Project Spaces and Museums: talks, tours and programmes examining contemporary art and society.

Saturday 21 November — Public Day: the largest citywide programme, including guided and self-directed routes.

Sunday 22 November — Family Day: workshops and Kids Buy Art, where children can purchase an artwork priced up to €100.

Artlovers Tip

Worth the trip—especially for discovering what comes next.

Amsterdam Art Week is less commercially overwhelming than the largest international art fairs and more closely connected to the city’s working art community. Its combination of institutional exhibitions, emerging practices and accessible gallery events makes it suitable for both experienced collectors and visitors entering contemporary galleries for the first time.

The main challenge is selection. With over 125 activities, trying to cover everything will result in more travelling than looking. Its real value comes from choosing a few neighbourhoods and allowing space for unexpected discoveries.
