Brâncuși stripped sculpture down to its essence. He did not want to reproduce what the eye sees — he wanted to capture what a thing truly is.

Why are they important?

Brâncuși is considered one of the pioneers of modern sculpture. His radical simplification of form influenced generations of artists, from Henry Moore to Isamu Noguchi and beyond.Looking at Brâncuși means watching sculpture become almost weightless. He reduced figures, birds, heads, fish and human bodies to essential shapes: an oval, a curve, a vertical line, a polished surface. Yet the simpler the form becomes, the more mysterious it feels. His famous Bird in Space is not really about depicting a bird. It is about flight. The Kiss becomes two bodies reduced to an elemental embrace. His polished sculptures seem almost impossibly smooth, reflecting the world around them and making the boundary between object and environment disappear.

Artlovers Tip

Brâncuși is an artist where seeing the work in person really matters. His polished surfaces, scale, materials and relationship with the surrounding space cannot be understood properly through a photograph.

With Brâncuși, simplicity is not the absence of ideas. It is the result of removing everything that is not essential.

Why it inspires us

What is real is not the exterior, but the essence of things.
