Inside the exhibition

Join us at Nationalmuseum in the spring and summer of 2026 for an inviting look at the life and work of Johan Tobias Sergel (1740–1814). A true star of the 18th-century art world, Sergel was much more than a local talent—he is remembered today as one of the most influential sculptors on the international stage.

This exhibition tells the full story of Sergel’s creative journey.

You’ll follow his path from his early beginnings in 1760s Stockholm to his formative travels through France and Italy, and finally to the grand projects he created for King Gustav III upon his return home. It’s a comprehensive celebration of a remarkable artist that we can't wait to share with you.
