Self-Portrait (1907)
About the Artwork
Picasso's 1907 Self-Portrait stands at a decisive turning point, painted the same year as Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. Features are reduced to angular planes drawn from Iberian sculpture. The large almond-shaped eyes and triangular nose lend a mask-like quality.
Created during his African Period, reflecting fascination with non-Western art forms encountered at the Trocadéro museum in Paris.
Acquired by Czech collector Vincent Kramář in 1911, now at the National Gallery Prague.
