The story behind it
"Living Paintings: Nature Dreams" is an immersive installation by Refik Anadol that uses artificial intelligence to reinterpret the natural world through machine perception. The work draws on approximately 300 million publicly available nature photographs, processed through custom machine learning algorithms to generate endlessly morphing visual compositions. Projected across walls and floors in darkened gallery spaces, the piece envelops viewers in luminous, undulating landscapes that hover between photographic realism and pure abstraction, evoking forests, oceans, mountains, and skies in constant metamorphosis.
The forms produced by the algorithm suggest organic processes — blooming, flowing, dissolving — yet remain distinctly synthetic, occupying an uncanny valley between the natural and the digital. Anadol's work raises questions about humanity's relationship with the environment in an increasingly mediated world, suggesting that AI might offer new aesthetic frameworks for appreciating nature's beauty.
