The story behind it
Drawing Operations Unit: Generation 1 (D.O.U.G._1) is the inaugural work in Sougwen Chung's landmark series exploring human-machine collaboration through drawing. Created in 2015 during Chung's research fellowship at MIT Media Lab, the piece pairs the artist with a robotic arm equipped with an overhead camera and computer-vision software. As Chung draws freehand with a white pencil on black paper, the robot simultaneously interprets their gestures in real time, producing its own parallel marks in an entirely improvised duet.
Each performance lasts approximately ten minutes and yields a unique drawing that is both a finished artwork and a record of the collaborative process. D.O.U.G._1 explores questions of authorship, agency, and the boundary between imitation and originality.
