Inside the exhibition
Towards a Sea — Yu Nishimura at Lafayette Anticipations in Paris, France, introduces the Japanese painter’s first solo institutional exhibition in the country. The show centers on his distinctive figurative style, where subjects appear to drift in and out of focus across the canvas, reflecting the hazy way the mind stores visual information.
The exhibition features around fifty pieces produced over the last ten years, including drawings and paintings executed in oil and tempera. Visitors encounter a recurring vocabulary of bicycles, animals, and coastal horizons, all rendered with a lightness that suggests a scene glimpsed in passing or a half-remembered dream rather than a sharp observation.
By gathering a decade of output, the show highlights Nishimura’s technical evolution and his interest in the gaps between observation and recollection. The inclusion of new works creates a fresh dialogue between his established motifs and the specific environment of the Rem Koolhaas-designed venue in the heart of the Marais.
