Inside the exhibition
Infinite Accumulation is a permanent site-specific installation by Yayoi Kusama, located at the Elizabeth line entrance of Liverpool Street station in London, UK. Part of the Art on the Underground programme, the work scales up the artist's signature polka-dot motif into a series of interconnected, gleaming silver spheres that reach over 10 metres high. These polished forms snake across the public plaza, creating a 100-metre-long path of reflections that integrate the city's architecture and its people into the artwork.
The installation features massive serpentine arches made from stainless steel. Kusama designed these forms intuitively, hand-twisting wires on original models to create the fluid, organic shapes now realized at an architectural scale. The highly reflective surfaces are intended to mirror the underlying unity and instability of the cosmos, a recurring theme in Kusama's decades-long career, now placed within the context of one of the city's major transit hubs.
Commissioned as the final piece of the Crossrail Art Programme, this work marks Kusama's first permanent public sculpture in the United Kingdom. It offers a distinct way to encounter her work outside the confines of a gallery, using the changing light and movement of London to activate the sculpture. By placing these dots in a shared space, the installation bridges the gap between individual psychological experience and the collective energy of the urban landscape.
