Inside the exhibition
The exhibition Guerrero/Vicente at Galería Cayón in Madrid, Spain, brings together the works of José Guerrero and Esteban Vicente, the only two Spanish painters who fully integrated into the American Abstract Expressionism movement. Visitors can explore their individual styles with free admission to the gallery during the Apertura Madrid 2026 gallery weekend.
The presentation comprises fifteen paintings in total, featuring eight works by Guerrero and seven by Vicente. This specific iteration focuses on large-scale canvases, showcasing a fresh selection of pieces that includes several important paintings by Guerrero that have not been shown to the public for decades.
Seeing these mature works side by side highlights how both creators developed radically different approaches to abstraction after their shared training in Madrid and Paris. While Vicente built atmospheric, luminous landscapes of color entirely devoid of black, Guerrero utilized bold gestural strokes and heavy black tones to generate intense structural tension across his canvases.
