At a glance

A private collection with the scale of a museum: around 250 works trace more than a century of modern and contemporary art inside a newly restored Florentine palazzo.

Why go

The Casamonti Collection provides a compelling counterpoint to Florence’s Renaissance identity. Its new home at Palazzo San Giorgio substantially expands the former display, bringing Italian masters into conversation with major international figures across 28 rooms and two floors.

You'll see

Works by artists including:

  • Giovanni Boldini, Giacomo Balla and Giorgio de Chirico
  • Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky and Salvador Dalí
  • Max Ernst, René Magritte and Maria Helena Vieira da Silva
  • Lucio Fontana, Alberto Burri and Piero Manzoni
  • Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring
  • Bill Viola, Marina Abramović and Anselm Kiefer
  • Anish Kapoor and Maurizio Cattelan

Don't miss

The progression from Fontana, Burri and Manzoni to Arte Povera, Pop and later conceptual practices. It reveals how strongly Italian post-war art participated in—and frequently anticipated—international artistic change.

Artlovers Tip

Highly recommended—and one of Florence’s most important new contemporary-art destinations.

The collection contains enough recognised names to be immediately attractive, but its real strength is continuity: visitors can move from the historical avant-garde to post-war Italian experimentation, Pop and Arte Povera, then onward to performance, video and twenty-first-century art.

Visit after exploring the historic centre and walk across the river towards Lungarno Serristori. The contrast between Renaissance Florence and the collection’s modern visual language makes both experiences feel sharper.

Inside the exhibition

Created by Florentine art dealer Roberto Casamonti, founder of Tornabuoni Arte, the collection first opened to the public at Palazzo Bartolini Salimbeni in 2018. Its move to Palazzo San Giorgio allows a much larger proportion of the holdings to be displayed simultaneously.

The nineteenth-century building, historically connected to Palazzo Serristori, has been restored and adapted by Archea Associati as a permanent home for the collection. Collection history
